Visiting Professor of Internet Studies
Georgetown University
Mike Nelson is currently Visiting Professor of Internet Studies in Georgetown University’s Communication, Culture, and Technology Program where he researches and teaches about the future of the Internet, innovation, technology policy, cyber-policy, and e-government. He is also a Research Associate for the CSC’s Leading Edge Forum Executive Programme, a global strategic research and advisory organisation dedicated to defining the future of IT and its impact on the enterprise.
Before joining the Georgetown faculty, Mike was Director of Internet Technology and Strategy at IBM, where he managed a team helping define and implement IBM’s Next Generation Internet strategy and consulted to heads of corporations and governments all around the world on Internet strategy and policy.
He’s a Trustee of the International Institute of Communication and has served in a number of volunteer leadership roles for the Internet Society. He is also the outgoing chairman of the Information, Computing, and Communications Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)- the world’s largest general science society.
Prior to joining IBM, Mike was Director for Technology Policy at the Federal Communications Commission and Special Assistant for Information Technology at the White House where he worked with Vice President Al Gore on information technology, encryption, electronic commerce and telecommunications policy.
Mike has a Bachelor in Science from Caltech, and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from MIT.
