Cloud Report Release and Conference – February 16, 2012 in Silicon Valley

To highlight the release of its report and recommendations on Cloud Computing adoption by State and Local Governments, the TechAmerica Foundation convened a Silicon Valley conference for State and Local Government officials and technology executives.   The event featured a review of the report’s major findings and recommendations and the unveiling of an online SLG Cloud Portal Collaborative Community.

Commission Charter, Leadership, and Related Facts:

In September 2011, the TechAmerica Foundation formed an expert panel of industry leaders to develop guidance to help state and local governments adopt and implement cloud technologies. The Foundation’s State & Local Government Cloud Commission (SLG-CC)  mission was to produce findings and recommendations that enable state and local governments to better serve their citizens by optimizing and advancing their use of cloud computing.

This commission was a separate, follow-on initiative focused on State and Local Government.   In July 2011, the TechAmerica Foundation released its recommendations for federal adoption of Cloud solutions, and U.S. commercial leadership in the market, via the Commission for the U.S. Leadership Opportunity in the Cloud (CLOUD2).

Government Advisors:

The SLG Cloud Commission appointed a group of expert government advisors to provide guidance and review deliverables.  The full list of Advisors can be found at:

SLG – Cloud Commission Timeline and Meetings:

The first meeting of the SLG Cloud Commission was held on October 5, 2011 in Denver, CO. The meeting coincided with the conclusion of the Annual Conference of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO).

The second meeting of the SLG Cloud Commission took place on October 31, 2011 in northern Virginia.

The commission’s third full meeting took place on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 (virtual).

A fourth meeting (also virtual) took place on January 20, 2012.

The SLG Cloud Commission released its report at a conference for government and industry leaders at Microsoft Corporation’s offices in Mountain View, California on February 16, 2012.

Other Information:

Commission activity was conducted through TechAmerica Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit and non-partisan affiliate of TechAmerica. To offset the expense of the commission, each commissioner was asked to make a donation to the Foundation in the following amounts: $3,000 for companies with less than $100 million in sales and $5,000 for those companies with $100 million or more in sales. Donations to the Foundation are tax deductible.

More information about the CLOUD2 Commission which concluded in July, 2011: As mentioned above, in March, TechAmerica Foundation comprised a commission of thought leaders to serve on our State and Local Gov’t Cloud Commission. The commission’s four-month mandate was to provide the Obama Administration with recommendations for how government should deploy cloud technologies and for public policies that will help drive U.S. innovation in the cloud.
