TechAmerica Foundation State & Local Government Cloud Commission

Cloud Report Release and Conference – February 16 in Silicon Valley
To highlight the release of its major report and recommendations on Cloud Computing adoption by State and Local Governments, the TechAmerica Foundation will convene a Silicon Valley conference for State and Local Government officials and technology executives.
The event will feature a review of the report’s major findings and recommendations and the unveiling of an online SLG Cloud Portal Collaborative Community. Panels will feature discussions with the State & Local Government Cloud Commission’s Government Advisors and Commissioners, and a keynote address by California’s Lieutenant Governor. More experts and top technology leaders will be confirmed soon.

Commission Charter, Leadership, and Deliverables:
The TechAmerica Foundation has formed an expert panel of industry leaders to develop guidance to help state and local governments adopt and implement cloud technologies. The Foundation’s State & Local Government Cloud Commission (SLG-CC) follows the Foundation’s recent release of a blueprint for the federal government’s adoption of cloud computing, which aimed to further the Obama Administration’s cloud-first strategy for government technology and for driving U.S. commercial leadership and innovation in the cloud.
The mission of SLG-CC is to produce findings and recommendations that will enable state and local governments to better serve their citizens by optimizing and advancing their use of cloud computing.

This commission is a separate, follow-on initiative focused on State and Local Government. The SLG Cloud Commission will specifically address some of the major roadblocks with cloud access and deployment that are unique to states and localities– including procurement practices – and deliver recommendations for surmounting barriers. The Foundation has formed a panel of Government Advisors, composed of key state & local government officials from around the U.S. who will help advise us during the development of the recommendations.

SLG – Cloud Commission Timeline and Meetings:
The first meeting of the SLG Cloud Commission was held on October 5, 2011 in Denver, CO. The meeting coincided with the conclusion of the Annual Conference of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO).
The second meeting of the SLG Cloud Commission took place on October 31, 2011 in northern Virginia.
The commission’s third full meeting took place on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 (virtual).
A fourth meeting (also virtual) took place on January 20, 2012.
On February 16, 2012, the SLG Cloud Commission will release its report and launch a web portal at a conference for government and industry leaders at Microsoft Corporation’s offices in Mountain View, California. For more information on the program, click here. Online registration is now open.

Commission activity is being conducted through TechAmerica Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit and non-partisan affiliate of TechAmerica. To offset the expense of the commission, each commissioner selected will be asked to make a donation to the Foundation in the following amounts: $3,000 for companies with less than $100 million in sales and $5,000 for those companies with $100 million or more in sales. Donations are tax deductible.
